Description
The Shield Knot is an ancient symbol of protection and warding. The 4-quadrant design is typical of symbols of protection, and has been used in one form or another for thousands of years, in many different cultures. This particular version of the shield knot is Norse, as it takes on a lot of the characteristics of the Solar Cross (or Odin’s Cross). The shield knot was used to ward off illness around sick people, or as an emblem on shields in battle.
This pendant is hand carved from Australian Camphor Laurel timber, and is finished with natural oils that harden to a glossy finish.
It measures around 50mm (2 inches) in diameter.
